ALLSTARS: Where Joy, Laughter, and Drinks Are Keys To Fulfilled Life!

In the vibrant land of Akwa Ibom, like in other parts of Nigeria, where football is a second religion, the Akwa Ibom Allstars Football Confederation stands out as a beacon of camaraderie and good cheer.

This isn’t just a club; it’s an exuberant congregation of retired football legends who, despite their advancing years, believe that life is best enjoyed with a football at their feet and a drink in hand. The

lush fields often echo with tales of their past glories.

The benefits of the club to its members are as legendary as the funny stories and twisted songs shared at the local bars after a spirited game on the pitch.

The club’s training sessions are often something to behold. Mostly every Saturday morning, the field buzzes with activity as members, clad in their vintage jerseys, gather in clusters arguing about EPL series. Grudgingly, they later go through a series of drills that would make even the most seasoned athlete chuckle.

The warm-up routines include the "Back-in-the-Day Bounce," a series of stretches that involves reminiscing about old matches while attempting to touch their toes. The sight of old footballers recounting their epic seasons, while struggling to keep their balance is nothing short of comedic gold.

But the real magic happens after the exercise. As the sun emerges from the horizon, the pitch transforms into a lively competitive hub.

Later, members gather under available shades like bars and grand baobab trees - where coolers or freezers brimming with drinks await, for the main social exchanges.

Usually, the "Allstars Hydration Station" offers a unique blend of drinks and local brews. Imagine the  signature "Bam Bam Brew,"—a concoction of fresh palm wine mixed with a dash of coconut water - rumored to have rejuvenating properties. "After a couple of sips, I feel like I could take on the World Cup again," quipped Chief "Golden Boot" Udo, as he pours himself another generous helping.

Family members are not left out in the benefits of Allstars. They are sometimes saved  the headaches from the grand old men, who hate to return home “late”! In Allstars, if members go home before midnight, that means they are home late. So, instead, they return very early - from 12am the next day!

Allstars is all about fun. It is where men forget their troubles, momentarily. The post-match analysis could be held over grilled fish or suya, monitored by Team B. “Alcohol without protein equals diabetes”, they say.

Nutrition, of course, is a key aspect of the club’s ethos. Some training sessions are  followed by some sort of feast that caters to the dietary needs of some players.

The bond and brotherhood is unimaginable. The group encourages trust, too. No need to cover your drink or carry it around, as a member is not expected to harm the other.

Allstars is always a spirited affair, with the seniors providing "expert commentaries" on the youngsters’ performances. Respect for age and hierarchy is sacrosanct!

The highlight of the club’s “sitting” is always, undoubtedly the storytelling and songs. But Allstars is “a court of injustice.” To commit an offence is an offence. And, not committing an offence is equally an offence. You can never win when the “all-knowing President” is in charge. Once the President is “erect”, nobody sits. And, “all good things” belong to him, at least during the “sitting.”

As the new exco of the Akwa Ibom Allstars Football Confederation led by Hon Ime Inoh assumed office, on May 18, 2024, all the  hilarious anecdotes and electrifying performances were on display. Many observers couldn’t help but marvel at the unique spirit of the club!

It wasn’t just about keeping fit or reminiscing about the past; it was about creating a community where joy, laughter, and a good drink form the keys to a fulfilled life.

In the end, the Allstars Football Club remains a testament to the idea that no matter your age, with a bit of exercise, a lot of laughter, and a glass of drink, life could always be a delightful game worth playing.

HOW AMOSUN RAN AWAY IN JAMAICA!

HOW AMOSUN RAN AWAY IN JAMAICA! Nigerian sprinter, Toni AMOSUN, “ran away” at the inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational on Saturday, May 11, 2024. She didn’t wait for other contestants at the event to catch up with her, from the word go, and ended up becoming    the world’s fastest woman in the women’s 100m hurdles. Amosun “ran away” with a world-leading time of 12.40 seconds in Kingston,    dusting the reigning world champion, Danielle Williams’ 12.46 seconds as well as USA’s Christina Clemens’ 12.54 seconds. Sports analysts say Amosun’s win was a good omen ahead of the summer’s biggest meetings and the 2024 Paris Olympics. She’s been in superb form throughout this year, as she opened her campaign with an African record of 12.58s in Doha last month. Indeed, the sprinter has picked up from where she left off after her gold-winning    world record run of 12.12s at last year’s World Championships in Oregon. In March, Amusan ran a time of 12.89 secon...

Feel Like Wrestling? Okay, Let’s Use the Toes!

Ever heard of toe wresting? Well, now you do. And if you get your toe nails removed a few times while engaging in the unusual sport, you would understand why Ben Woodroffe, a 34-year-old railway worker from Wetton, Derbyshire, feels like an Olympian. He is currently to world champion and he didn’t get it by eating sandwich. The sport involves bare foot competitors locking toes on a ‘toedium’, trying to pin each opponent's foot to a wooden plank. Woodroffe, known as ‘The Toe-tal Destruction’, had to remove his two big toenails, surgically,    to give him an edge over others. According to the    Mirror newspaper, Woodroffe became the world champion of toe-wrestling - 20 years after taking up the bizarre sport, following years of intended training and broken bones. According to the wrestler, the sport has its downsides: aside from blisters and sore knees, the toes can break and get too painful.    “As with any contact sport, you have to be careful of hygiene, ...
